What are Smart Meters?
Smart meters are electric and gas meter reading devices that are being installed all over the US as a first step in creating a national smart grid. They were designed to enhance energy efficiency and make widespread adoption of renewable energy easier, but a problem has arisen: they are radio transmitters, which means that they communicate data from homes and businesses to the gas and electric companies through a matrix of radio signals, which is ultimately a form of microwave radiation.
Are Smart Meters Hazardous to Your Health?
The type of radiation that smart meters emit has been shown to damage human health on many different biological levels. Additionally, thousands of people have been reporting immediate symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, heart palpitations, tinnitus, high blood pressure, and insomnia—all of which can be directly correlated with the installation of smart meters on their homes. These symptoms are also classic signs of the condition referred to as "electrosensitivity", which supports the theory that abrupt exposure to high levels of microwave radiation, like those emitted by smart meters, can actually cause people to become more and more sensitive to sources of EMF and radiation exposure. Exposure to microwave radiation has led to complete life-debilitation for thousands of people.

Unclear Answers About Radiation Levels
Power companies have been citing inconsistent information about how frequently smart meter radiation is emitted, as well as how strong the radiation signal actually is. Some representatives say the meters transmit radio frequencies (RF) six times a day - others say once an hour. EMF specialists have measured them as being emitted every 45 seconds, or even twice in a minute. How can it be that we have so many conflicting answers?
There is even more confusion on just how strong these radio frequencies are. Power companies maintain that RF transmissions from smart meters are far weaker than other everyday radio frequency emitters like cell phones, cell towers, and WiFi. However, independent environmental EMF consultants have found that smart meter pulses are far greater in intensity than the “average pulse” that many utility companies claim - sometimes up to 1000 times more powerful than a cell phone! Indeed, the strength of the signals could be the very reason why so many people have been reporting immediate health symptoms.
Non-Compliance with FCC Standards
Independent researchers published a report concluding that smart meters often do not even comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) safety standards, which, in themselves, are insufficient for measuring radiation levels in smart meters. Set back in 1996, FCC standards were based on studies which used healthy, 6’2”, 220 lb men exposed to microwave radiation for only short periods of time - very different from the reality of smart meter emissions, in which women, children, and people in fragile health are continuously exposed to radiation. Furthermore, combined sources of radiation (such as from WiFi, cell phones, and other wireless devices) were not present in the testing, and therefore not taken into account. For these reasons, the report cautions that smart meters are not safe.
